DIY Hallway Board & Batten Project

We’ve tackled MANY projects here in this sweet house of ours…but this one may take the cake for biggest + most dramatic impact thus far!!! We’ve seen a ton of DIY board and batten tutorials/hacks/inspiration, so we knew it was something we would LOVE to try!  A few 1x2s, a couple days, lots of caulking and a gallon of paint later, we are OBSESSED!!!

This project started like everything does…with Carson’s help and a round of before photos so we can see where we started!

Then we ventured to Lowe’s to grab the primed pdf boards.  We went with the 1x2s because the smaller width seemed somewhat more modern to us! It felt a little more streamlined and allowed us to use more in the space!

A few measures later, Bret started nailing them to the wall!  We cut ours to just under 4foot so we could get 2 vertical pieces from each board!  Plus this height hit at the perfect level, too!! It just felt RIGHT!!

For our topper, we used one horizontal 1×2 AND a cut one on it’s side to create a ‘beveled’ look that matched our picture frame trim!

After getting allllll the boards nailed and into place, the caulking + wood filling shenanigans began!  THIS was the most time consuming part.  Bret was obsessively checking each gap/seam/crack/nail hole to make sure everything was finished off nicely!

After letting the caulk + wood filler fully cure, Bret sanded everything down smooth smooth smooth!!!

Up next…PAINT!!  All of our trim work in the house is painted Sherwin William’s Accessible Beige, so we carried that same color up onto the board and batten to add some depth & extra impact to the look!  Bret’s favorite task is painting, so he was in his happy place!!

AND MAN OH MAN…the final product is show-stopping!!! These afters are unbelievable!!

And this is where it allll began.  This is what those spaces looked like when we bought our house!! A little paint and lots of love goes such a long way!!!
