The Goedde Family Session

Yayyyyy!! Engagement session season is upon us and we could not be more excited! This means that the weather is warming up, and all the barren, blah environments are turning green, lush, and lovely-looking! You may be thinking about passing up on an engagement session, but we 110% recommend having one. I mean, hello?!?! You’re only going to be fiancés once in this lifetime and that is definitely something that we think you’ll want to look back on 50 years down the road! This time of the year is the perfect time to get those sessions knocked out!

Today we thought we would share a few of our favorite tips when it comes to preparing for your engagement session. We always try our best to be helpful and encouraging when it comes to these sessions because it is something that our couples have never done before. Most brides ask us where they should even begin with these sessions and we love being involved in that planning process with them. Being able to celebrate this special season of our couples’ lives is one of our favorite perks of the job! We typically try to focus on three main things: location, clothing, and details. Let’s start off with some location tips!

Location, location, location! A location can make or break some photos so what type of environment are you envisioning for your photos? You want your location to be special and unique to you and your fiancé. Try to think outside the box and think of any friends/relatives that may have special spots you could use for your session – you’ll be surprised what you can come up with! Sports stadiums, hotels, airports, maybe even an old family farmhouse. If you think your idea is impossible, just remember that it never hurts to ask! Dream BIG! We also recommend choosing a few different locations, but try to choose locations that are somewhat close to each other. This will ensure that you get the most out of your time with us! If you find yourself having some trouble thinking of a location, do not hesitate to let us know. We have a few spots that never let us down – we can always head to some of our best-kept secret spots!

Up next – clothes! This tends to be where most of the questions lie. We encourage you both to dress it up! It is not every day that you get to prance around in a flower crown or a dapper-looking suit! We love love love when our clients get fancy and it makes the sessions oh so fun!! Ladies, say yes and yes again to dresses! Dresses are fun, flowy, and photograph very well.  Wear something that flatters your features and makes you feel comfortable in your skin! There is just something so feminine and delicate about dancing around in a beautiful dress! We do recommend that you and your beau try to coordinate outfits, but try to keep it from being too matchy-matchy. Your neutral, softer tones will help bring more attention to your smiling faces, rather than just to your bold outfit and they pair well with outdoor environments and natural sunlight! Typically our brides know exactly what they want to wear to these sessions, but the men sometimes struggle. Start with your outfit and move forward from there!

For our fellas out there, we recommend some layering. The layering of your outfits helps show dimension in photos. We aren’t recommending that you show up in ten layers finished off with a parka, but sometimes a sweater and a tie underneath can go a long way! Sometimes this time of year, temperatures can rise. Try to realize that a few minutes being uncomfortable or warm can result in a lifetime of beautiful photos. Are you thinking about wearing a suit?!?! Please do!! The ladies aren’t the only ones that can look flawless. Suits can bring a special dapper touch to your photos. Maybe even throw in a coordinating pocket square to really tie the look together. I’m sure it would make your future bride happy if you threw in a clean-shaven, manicured face too – HA!

Last, but definitely not least – DETAILS! Remember to think through all of the little details. Your engagement ring is going to be the star of the show, so think about a possible professional cleaning before your session. We also recommend a fresh manicure to show off that rock! Many of our brides schedule professional hair and makeup before their session to make sure that they are bringing their A-game. We love the touch of bold, statement jewelry pieces as they tend to photograph better than smaller, ornate pieces of jewelry. Would you like to include some fresh flowers or greenery? Please do – the Nowaks will never say no to fresh flowers!

Whatever you decide to do, please remember to do it in confidence! Your confidence and a beautiful smile are the best accessories that you can bring to your engagement session. I mean, what’s not to smile about? You’re celebrating a HUGE moment in your lives! Do you still have questions? If you do, that’s a-okay and like we stated before, please do not hesitate to bring your questions to us. We want to make sure that we are there for you every step of the way through this process. We will do everything that we can to make sure that you and your images look like a million bucks! Check out some of our past engagement sessions for some inspiration from some of our rockstar clients!
