“Mitchell proposed to me on May 13, 2023, which just so happened to be my 25th birthday. I had a planned lunch with my friends, who to my later surprise, had been in on the secret the whole time. When they dropped me off at home after lunch, I was expecting to go run an errand with my dad; however, when I walked inside nobody, including my dog, was home. I stood at my kitchen counter for a bit calling out names. It took me a second to notice a balloon with a note tied to it and rose petals on the floor at the top of my stairs. The note, written in Mitchell’s handwriting, instructed me to follow the rose petals and candles, which led down my stairs, through my basement, and outside to my backyard. He was waiting for me with a banner that read “Will you marry me?” and a small table with champagne and a single rose. It was a dream.”
“I had a lot of thoughts in my mind while waiting for Kylie to arrive. I told myself to not mess up with kneeling. Her friend texted me when Kylie was dropped off and it felt like an eternity before she came down to her backyard. I was wondering what in the world she was doing and whether she saw the balloon and/or thought it was something to do with her birthday. Through my nerves, I was just really excited to finally propose to her.”
“I had absolutely no idea that I would be proposed to on this day. I had told Mitchell awhile back when we were talking about marriage a few things I would like and not like for a proposal. I told him not to propose on a holiday, my birthday, or in a very public place. I wished for the proposal to be intimate, with just us two, but with the ability to celebrate with friends and family afterward. Because of this, I really did not see it coming on my birthday. Mitchell, my family, and my friends had all kept such a good composure and never slipped up. I never caught on; however, after all was said and done, I ran through my day in my mind and thought oh, that’s why this or that happened how it did. He knows how important it is to me that our cat, Bronco, is safe inside and does not get outside. On the note tied to the balloon, he assured me that Bronco was safe in my room with the doors shut. He also surprised me with two photographers, Bret and Brandie, who were hidden in my backyard to capture the entire moment. My adrenaline was through the roof because not only was I saying yes to the man of my dreams, I was also so genuinely surprised in the best way possible. Him proposing in my backyard meant so much to me as this was the house I have grown up in. It was the perfect intimate proposal followed by celebrations with family and friends. It turns out that a birthday proposal was just the perfect scenario.”
Mitchell’s words: “My favorite memories were setting up for the proposal and watching Kylie walk out towards me. I felt all the excitement, nervousness, and anticipation while setting everything up, knowing I was about to take such a huge step in our relationship. I did not expect to shed tears, but seeing the pure, raw emotion on Kylie’s face did it for me. I also love the memory of telling Kylie there was an engagement party with our friends set up for the evening. Her reaction to everything that happened made me very happy.”
Kylie’s words: “It is genuinely hard to pinpoint a favorite memory from this day. The entire day was perfect. I will never forget the feeling and had said that I wished I could relive it over and over again. Saying “yes” to Mitchell was so surreal. Embracing my family and his family afterwards was amazing. Celebrating with our friends was so much fun. It really was a day filled with love. “
“Mitchell and I grew up in the same hometown of Newburgh, IN. We both attended Castle High School and were in the same friend group. We had no love interest in each other until sophomore year of college. Mitchell attended the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, IN and I attended Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. We were both back home for Christmas break our sophomore year at a friend’s house. The USF football team that Mitchell played for had just won Back-to-Back National Championships. I sparked conversation with him about that and we, for the first actual time ever, had more than surface level conversations all night.”
“Mitchell and I dated on and off a couple times in college before we realized we had something special and were ready to put in the work for each other. We had been dating for a little over four years when he proposed. Two of the four years were spent long distance with Mitchell remaining in Fort Wayne and me finishing undergrad at IU and grad school in Muncie, IN.”
“We have been enjoying and soaking in the newly engaged feelings and moments. We currently have our eyes on a wedding venue and have a tour scheduled soon. We are building visions of what we love and don’t love regarding the details of the wedding. We are very excited to land a date and go from there!”
“I want to shout out my family, Mitchell’s family, and our friends for playing such important roles in the proposal. My family- Kyra (sister), Jana (mom), and Rob (dad), not only surprised me by setting up for my birthday, but had also been working behind the scenes to help Mitchell with anything he needed. Mitchell’s family- Marti (mom) and Steve (dad), generously opened their home for our engagement party and also helped Mitchell however he needed. My friends, Megan, Lexie, and Lindsey were amazing with communicating with Mitchell to make sure everything went smoothly and as planned up to the point of dropping me off at home to our proposal. To all our friends and Mitchell’s family who came to the engagement party- thank you for celebrating our love with us. We are both so appreciative of our people and the support and love they shower us with!
Also- huge shout out to Bret and Brandie for capturing the moments we will cherish for a lifetime! We appreciate you and your work.”
