Starting (or restarting) a photography business can feel like a lot, right? There’s soooo much to learn, soooo many things to juggle and let’s be honest…it can get overwhelming fast. But if we could sit down with our past selves over coffee and spill allll the secrets, this is what we’d say….Whether you’re just getting started or looking for a fresh perspective, we hope this advice feels like a big sister-style pep talk to help you kickoff your journey with confidence (and maybe a little less stress)!!!
Your social media is like your biz BFF…it works for you even when you’re not working! Your vibe attracts your tribe! Be super intentional with what you post…if you want more wedding bookings, flood your feed with dreamy wedding shots. If elopements are your thing, show off those adventurous, intimate moments. Potential clients are always watching, so curate your content like a vision board for the business you want!!!
There are sooo many photographers who are more than willing to help! Find them, connect with them, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Many offer mentorships that are worth every penny…investing in learning from those ahead of you can accelerate your growth in ways you can’t imagine!
It’s so easy to compare yourself to others, especially on social media. But remember…you’re on your own journey. Don’t compare your work to someone who’s been in business for years. Stay in your lane, keep practicing and trust that your hard work will pay off. You’ll get there, bestie!!
We know photo gear is expensive af. But if you already know you’ll need a better camera or lens down the road, save up and invest in the best option from the start rather than upgrading multiple times. Then dive in, play around, push every button and truly know your gear inside & out. The more comfortable you are with your stuff, the more confident & creative you’ll be behind the lens!
Trends come and go but finding a style that truly calls to you is key. Don’t chase every editing/posing/social media trend…stick to what makes your work feel like you and practice, practice, practice. Consistency is what builds a recognizable + powerhouse brand!!!
Your fellow creative vendors? They are gold. Networking with florists, planners, venues, and other wedding pros can completely uplevel your business. **Building strong relationships in your industry leads to referrals, collaborations, and massive growth…so don’t underestimate the power of community!
This journey isn’t always easy, but believe in yourself and know that you can do this. Every great photographer started somewhere and if you stay consistent, keep learning and push past the challenges, we know you’ll build something truly amazing.
If we could time-travel back to our early days, we’d give ourselves the biggest pep talk and maybe a hug because, wow, it was such a journey!🥹 If you’re in the thick of it now (or just need a little boost) we hope this love & advice helps! Keep showing up, keep creating and most importantly…keep believing in yourself. You’ve got this and we’re cheering you on every step of the way! 📸✨🚀
